Regions are evaluated against the National Ambient Air Quality Standards to determine their attainment status. The NAAQS set allowable ambient concentrations for common pollutants, and monitors collect data to see if a region’s air meets those levels over specified time periods. If the measurements are within the standards, the area is designated as attainment; if they exceed the standards, it’s nonattainment, and the area must implement stronger controls to meet the standards.
